Why do these students say they will or will not vote?

In our survey we asked them to write-in their explanation. Those who will vote at 18 said:

“So I can have a say in the current government. Also the government takes enough of my money as it is. I can do without fines for not voting.”

“Because unless you vote, you cannot say you have no influence! You can try to have an influence by voting.”

“Because I think it’s really important that we all get our say, because we’re voting for who will run our country.”

“Because I will. Everybody needs to vote. If you don’t vote, you don’t have the right to complain about the government.”

“Well, I am not 18 yet so the excitement is quiet low. But when I am 18, definitely.”

“I don’t have a choice! Do I? Vote or a fine…nice choice.”

"With this weapon, I either kill or die today, you will not take al-Libiyah channel. You won’t take Jamahiriyah channel, Shababiyah channel, Tripoli or all of Libya, and even those without a weapon are willing to be a shield in order to protect their colleagues at this channel. We are willing to become martyrs."

— An anchorwoman on al-Libyah TV, the state run Libyan news channel, urges Gaddafi loyalists to take up arms against those taking part in the uprisings throughout Tripoli. (via heraldscum)

The comments on articles in The Australian scare me sometimes

lmwd of Qld Posted at 8:28 AM August 15, 2011

You see, it is the arrogance and ignorance you display in stating that the carbon dioxide tax will be a reality that turns the voting public off. You assume this is good policy for the simple reason you have not read widely of the many scientists who are currently challenging the hypothesis this ridiculous tax is built on. No, instead, Labor has taken advice from a limited number of scientists who have been paid handsomely by Govt to trot out doomsday scenarios via their computers and Labor have formulated policy on that basis. The long term implications for our economy are unknown, but then it will not be Labor sorting out the economic mess, a la European style. The problem for Labor is a free media and many of us are becoming informed of how dodgy the underpinning science is. Sooner or later the general public will become aware of how they have been manipulated by money grabbing Govt and a small coterie of scientists. I suggest you read the recent research findings of both Professors Lindzen and Salby and consider seriously the scientific and policy implications. No doubt you will lose that arrogance bred of ignorance! Comment 38 of 134

  • OH it all makes sense now. That’s why we are in a recession, the government bribed scientists to justify a policy that has driven them into the ground because they like it when the electorate hates them. I mean its so typical of politicians to, for no reason, create policies that their electorate doesn’t understand and needs critical analysis in its explanation. This is all part of their master plan.
  • His media argument makes no sense. On one hand someone needs to go into bat against the vicious, manipulative left-wing media because we have all been duped by Labor. And at the same time the free media is a problem for Labor?
  • What the hell does, “a la European style,” mean? Like, really?
  • Does this person really think that the general public is for the carbon tax? I only ask because he thinks that we need to wake up from our general love of it? Is this why so many Abbott supporters want to ‘ditch the witch?’
  • How is it ignorance to think that the carbon tax won’t be a reality? Unless they do have another Bi-election they have the votes they need to get it through both levels of parliament.
  • Especially that it is ignorance to think that, “the carbon dioxide tax will be a reality that turns the voting public off.” I think you meant ‘turns us ON,’ there moron.
